Role Overview
DataOne is seeking a Senior Mechanical and Cooling Engineer to drive the design, optimization, and deployment of advanced mechanical and HVAC systems within our AI-focused data centers. In this role, you will ensure the seamless integration of cooling, fire suppression, and ventilation systems, maintaining top-tier energy efficiency and reliability. Working with a diverse, multidisciplinary team—including electrical, structural, and architectural—your expertise will be critical in achieving holistic system performance and compliance with industry standards.
Key Responsibilities
HVAC & Cooling System Design
- Design and optimize HVAC systems (CRAC units, chilled water loops, and economizers) to support high-density computing environments.
- Conduct energy efficiency analyses, load calculations, and system modeling using industry-standard simulation tools.
- Incorporate redundancy and failover strategies to ensure data center uptime requirements are met.
Equipment Selection & Specification
- Specify and select mechanical equipment such as air handlers, pumps, chillers, and cooling towers, focusing on performance, reliability, and sustainability.
- Evaluate emerging cooling technologies—e.g., liquid cooling, free cooling, indirect evaporative cooling—for potential integration into new or existing facilities.
- Collaborate with procurement and vendor management teams to assess equipment costs, delivery timelines, and lifecycle impacts.
Fire Suppression & Ventilation
- Develop and implement fire suppression systems tailored to data center environments, aligning with both local and international codes.
- Ensure ventilation and exhaust systems meet safety, environmental, and operational standards.
- Oversee testing and commissioning of fire and life safety systems, maintaining comprehensive documentation.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work alongside electrical, structural, and architectural teams to integrate mechanical solutions into comprehensive data center designs.
- Participate in design reviews, clash detection sessions (BIM), and on-site coordination meetings.
- Provide technical guidance to construction and facilities management teams throughout the project lifecycle.
Regulatory Compliance & Standards
- Ensure all mechanical systems adhere to ASHRAE guidelines, local regulations, and safety standards.
- Maintain awareness of evolving regulations related to refrigerants, emissions, and energy performance.
- Advocate for sustainable practices, integrating renewable energy sources and cutting-edge cooling innovations wherever feasible.
Performance Monitoring & Optimization
- Use simulation tools (e.g., Carrier HAP, Trane TRACE 700) to analyze thermal loads, airflow patterns, and potential energy savings.
- Perform ongoing evaluations of mechanical systems, identifying opportunities for efficiency and cost reduction.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives, incorporating feedback and lessons learned into future project designs.
Documentation & Reporting
- Generate detailed design documents, technical specifications, and system layouts using AutoCAD or Revit(BIM).
- Prepare regular project status updates, risk assessments, and optimization proposals for senior management.
- Ensure rigorous version control and maintain accurate records of design changes and as-built conditions.
Skills & Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
- Experience: 8+ years in mechanical/HVAC engineering with a focus on data centers, mission-critical facilities, or similarly complex environments.
Proven track record of improving energy efficiency and system reliability in high-density computing facilities. - Technical Skills: Proficiency with Carrier HAP, Trane TRACE 700, AutoCAD, and Revit (BIM).
Experience with ANSYS or other thermal analysis tools is a plus.
Knowledge of various fire suppression systems (e.g., FM200, water mist, dry-pipe) and ventilation best practices. - Soft Skills: Strong leadership, collaboration, and communication skills, with the ability to excel in a global, multi-disciplinary team.
- Certifications: Professional Engineer (PE) license or equivalent; additional certifications in HVAC or data center design (ASHRAE, Uptime Institute) are advantageous.
